Piece of Land

Last couple of days, I had a couple of discussions with my friends. Some asked: "Where could we find a piece of land, so we can claim it as belonging to our new nation?".
Of course, we need even more than claim it as a new country, we need to be able to guard it, defend it even by the use of arms... Otherwise other nations will conquer it...
Couple of suggestions that come to my mind:

• build a raft, boat, yacht, island
• occupy a piece of land in a war zone or buffer
• discover an uncharted isle or territory
  
• change some country's constitution as to allow for territorial changes, occupy the free land
